Alejandro Sonera aka MC Alex
Alex’s first exposure to music was through the church.
He loved singing and it was in the church choir where
he received his first formal vocal training. Although Alex
experimented with the drums as a teenager, singing was
his first love and when he started high school he auditioned
and received lead roles in musical productions including
“Peter Pan”, “On The Town” and a tribute to multiple
musicals called, “Broadway, New Show In Town”.
When Alex began college in the fall of 1977, he immediately joined the Queens
College Choral Society and also sang and played drums with a local gospel
group in Corona, Queens. During this time, Alex began to sing at weddings,
birthday parties and other formal events including church socials. Upon
graduation from college, Alex decided to settle on a more conventional career in
healthcare although he continued to work on his craft by performing at piano
bars in Manhattan. Marriage and a growing family forced Alex to shift his
focus and shelve his singing for a little while although he continued to perform
for friends at every event he attended. However, he was thrust into another area
of entertainment when he was asked to host a wedding for a friend at the last
moment. Alex stayed with it and began to perform as a master of ceremonies for
formal events at work including at his current job where he has hosted grand
openings, dedications, annual outdoor festivals and recently the 30th
anniversary gala.
In 1996, Alex met Julio at a club called Metro in Long Island. Julio at that time
was playing with Orquesta Noble. After hearing Alex sing along to music
several times after that first encounter, he asked Alex if he would be interested
in singing backup for Orquesta Noble. The rest is history. Alex sang backup
with Orquesta Noble until Julio formed Conjunto Moderno and asked Alex to
be his lead vocalist. When Julio decided to disband Conjunto Moderno and
concentrate his efforts on being a disc jockey, Alex joined him and has worked
with him as his exclusive MC and vocalist and has been with Julio ever since.
Alex released his first demo compact disc recording "Romancing With You" in
the spring of 2005.
